The United States just took a step into the future lead by the newly developed city in Florida: Babcock Ranch. Babcock Ranch is the first city in the United States to be completely solar powered. The city is recognized as an eco-city and is the first of its kind within the U.S. The city is located just north of Fort Myers and about three hours away from bustling Miami.

Babcock Ranch just gained its first residents, The Kinley family, and looks to eventually have 50,000 inhabitants within the city. The city’s concept was created by developer Syd Kitson. Kitson is a former football player of the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. Kitson’s vision for the city was to provide people an environmentally friendly and forward thinking community that was both affordable and sustainable.  Kitson boats Babcock Ranch contains the largest photovoltaic solar energy generation field. The field contains 343,000 panels spread out over 440 acres.  The field provides 74.5 megawatts of solar capacity. Babcock Ranch has proposed to host around 19,500 houses with the available real estate surrounded by acres of lush greenery.

The community will offer other ecological friendly advancements, such as self driving electric buses to commute within the city. Within the city there are also Solar Trees, which are thought forward and innovative. The Solar Trees allow residents to power their phones and tablets while out and about. Residents also have the option of installing additional solar panels on their rooftops to decrease their monthly bill and be more economically efficient.

Florida’s Babcock Ranch has really taken a step into the future and given other states within the United States a solar example. Babcock Ranch will continue to grow, both in acreage and in with technological advancements.
